Abstract
AimTo study the prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) in type II diabetes mellitus (DM) with respect to diabetic retinopathy (DR).
Methods
Cross sectional comparative study among 100 DM cases in a university hospital over 6 months. Complete eye evaluation done. DED confirmed clinically by Tear film break up time (TBUT) and Schirmer’s test and Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire.
Results
Mean age 55.98 ± 9.28. Mean DM duration 11.614 years. 54 patients (54%) had DR changes. 35 (64.8%) of 54 DR subjects had DED based on Schirmer’s test. DR patients had 2.98 times chance of Schirmer’s value ≤10mm than without DR. 50 DM patients had TBUT <10sec in which 39 (78%) had DR, showing 7.09 times chance in DR cases. High association was seen in OSDI scoring (p <0.01), DM duration(p<0.0005), HbA1c(p<0.0005) with clinical DED severity. Conclusion DR patients have high risk for DED so thorough DED evaluation is needed. OSDI test also helps in identification and improving patient comfort.
