Abstract
AIM
To study the association between 17β Estradiol (E2) with Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and dry eye (DE) in postmenopausal women (PMW).
METHODS
Cross sectional comparative study of 100 PMW was conducted between January to December 2019. 50 PMW with DE and MGD (DE group) compared with 50 PMW with no DE (normal group).
RESULTS
In PMW normal E2 value was between 0-32pg/ml. In the DE group the mean E2 value was 30.90pg/ml and in normal group-16.02pg/ml. The mean E2 value in DE group according to MGD staging : stage 1-28, stage 2-28.4, stage 3-32.3, stage 4-35.1 pg/ml respectively.
A significant positive P value of 0.0005 was obtained.
CONCLUSION
E2 values were higher in the PMW with DE and E2 values increased as MGD severity increased. Estrogen levels will alter Meibomian gland morphology leading to evaporative DE in PMW. Further researches are needed to study the effectiveness of hormonal therapy for DE in PMW. Our study shows results similar to some landmark studies.
