Abstract

Squamous cell carcinoma of the conjunctiva is the end-stage of a spectrum of disease referred to as ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN). OSSN is a malignant disease of the eyes that can lead to loss of vision and, in severe cases, death. The main risk factors for both are exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation outdoors, HIV/AIDS, human papilloma virus and allergic conjunctivitis. In general, SCC of the conjunctiva is regarded as a low grade malignancy. Recurrence rates are generally higher for more severe grades of OSSN and are also related to adequacy of margins at initial excision. The authors present a case of recurrent squamous cell carcinoma of conjunctiva involving lid margin too. The case was operated elsewhere and recurrence happened within 2 weeks. The case was managed by excision, cryotherapy and subsequent mitomycin c eye drops application (4 cycles).
