Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate incidence, risk factors, pathogens, use of systemic and intravitreal antibiotics, and visual outcome of traumatic endophthalmitis following open globe injury. Methods: retrospective study of 52 post-traumatic endophthalmitis patients, from 2014 to 2019 treated at a rural eye hospital in India was included. Risk factors, common isolated organisms and outcome were investigated. Results -organisms were isolated in 16 patients, Gram-negative bacteria was the most commonly isolated organisms, Bacillus cereus had a very fulminant course and ended with phthisis bulbi. The final visual acuity improved in only 8 patients. Conclusions: Early wound repair, intravitreal antibiotics and prompt vitrectomy may salvage useful vision in few patients with traumatic endophthalmitis. Delay of treatment for more than 24 hours was associated with increased risk of significant complication. Further training and strengthening the rural hospital is recommended for betterment of community
