Abstract
Aim: Comparative study of Mitomycin-C and 5-Fluorouracil in the management of patients with biopsy proven Ocular Surface Squamous Neoplasia.
Study design: Prospective randomized interventional study of 42 patients(30 male,12 female) out of which one group was given MMC(0.04%) and the other,5-FU(1%). They were followed upto 18 months in regular interval of 2 months.
Results: Patients treated with MMC had recurrence rate of 33.4%(n=7) with complain of pain(n=12,57.2%), photophobia(n=10,47.7%), epiphora(n=5,23.9%) and itching(n=4,19.1%). Signs observed were corneal epitheliopathy(n=8,38.1%)and hyperaemia(n=3,14.3%).
Patients treated with 5-FU had recurrence rate of 43%(n=9) and had pain(n=11,52.4%), photophobia(n=7,33.4%), epiphora(n=4,19.1%) and itching(n=1,4.8%). Signs observed were epitheliopathy(n=6,28.6%) and hyperaemia(n=2,9.6%).
Conclusion: Both drugs are equally comparable. Although MMC has poor compliance, it has lesser recurrence rate as compared to 5-FU, hence more effective.
