Abstract
Methodology: A randomized study on 100 eyes of patients who were previously treated for macular edema(ME) using intravitreal therapy. 50 patients of group A received intravitreal triamcinolone at the conclusion of phacoemulsification were compared with 50 patients of Group B who did not receive any injection, on the basis of CSFT on OCT, visual acuity and need for additional intravitreal injections in the next 6 months.
Results: Patients who were recently treated for ME within 4 months of surgery, benefited from prophylactic steroid injection as it significantly reduced the need for additional steroid injections. No significant gain in vision was however noticed between the two groups despite differences in CSFT. Thus, we recommend it as a treatment option in patients with recently treated ME to prevent exacerbation.
