Abstract
Purpose:To determine the visual outcomes and ocular complication rates following Cataract surgery in modern era of biologic therapy
Methods:Children with non-infectious uveitis with Cataract were operated and followed up 1, 3, 5, and 10 months post surgery. The association between various baseline characteristics and later visual impairment was investigated.
Results:Of the 11 eyes of 8 children, 5 had a systemic disease association. 7 eyes received methotrexate, 3 progressed to a biologic. 3 received intraoperative IVMP. Following Cataract surgery Children on intraoperative IVMP had a better control of inflammation and visual outcome in early postoperative period. Children on Biologics had better outcome than those on steroids alone on long term follow up based on visual outcome and control of inflammation.
Conclusion:These early results of children receiving a biological therapy reflect need of increasing utilisation of biological agents in the management of inflammation in children.
