Abstract
Any drug, device or procedure used for a different indication, dosage, age group or mode of administration than approved by drug controller is called off label use of drugs. More than 50% of ophthalmic medications are used off-label . Drug approval starts with New Drug application to FDA. The manufacturer submits information regarding pre-clinical research. Only a small percentage of drugs pass all three phases of costly and lengthy clinical trial. After approval, label is added to the drug regarding its indications, dosage, side effects and mode of administration. To avoid this lengthy procedure and high costs most drugs don’t pass through all these procedures. The IC will discuss the various off label drugs and procedures of ophthalmology along with what an ophthalmologist must know regarding their use, precautions taken, laws related to it and legal implications. After the IC the ophthalmologist will be more confident and secure in practicing ophthalmology in a legal manner.
