Abstract

Aim: To describe the outcomes of a novel customized tissue sparing approach of topography guided removal of corneal epithelium with stromal ablation for localized corneal scars

Method: 8 eyes with anterior stromal corneal scars 2 mm – 6 mm in diameter were recruited & customized ablation pattern was planned on the PTK-CAM module of Schwind Amaris laser platform, depending on depth of scar measured on Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography. The ablation was centered over the opacity rather than the corneal apex.

Results: Mean maximum keratometry changed from 48.95 D preoperatively (preop) to 45.1 D post-operatively(postop). Mean uncorrected distance visual acuity improved from 0.73 ± 0.13 logMAR preop to 0.15 ± 0.1logMAR postop at 6 months

Conclusion: Our novel customized ablation technique is tissue sparing &allows customization with regards to location, depth and shape of corneal scars. It is a safe and effective procedure in the management of corneal scars
