Abstract
We intended to demonstrate the propensity of aerosol generation during phacoemulsification(phaco) and quantify its spread amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
We performed the experiment in 3 different settings namely the Wetlab, Mechanical Engineering Lab where imaging was done using high speed shadowgraphy technique, and finally a live demonstration in the OT. We observed that in longitudinal phaco no aerosol generation was seen in a closed chamber. In larger wounds however there was a slow leak at the main wound but absence of aerosolisation. Atomization of Balanced salt solution was seen when the phaco tip was completely exposed and placed outside the eye on the ocular surface . With no visible aerosol generation during phaco, it is safe to perform in the COVID era with adequate precautions against other modes of transmission. But to be doubly sure, we propose simple tips, tricks & precautions to be taken while operating, so as to reassure surgeons in these frightening times.
