Meditation has been shown by several analyses to calm the restless mind & thereby provide a multitude of ancillary health benefits. Mindfulness or being in the present & NOW is critical to maintain focus on the job on hand. Many a time we complete several surgeries in the OR merely by muscle memory & instinct with the mind wandering about other issues. Concentrating fully on each of the surgical steps we perform can be a form of meditation in itself that not only benefits the surgeon but also the patient too as an attentive & focussed surgeon will be quick to spot any untoward surgical occurrence at an early stage thus obviating further complications. Thus long hours in the OR can be gainfully utilised without fatigue as ‘meditative hours’.No additional time need be set aside for the sole purpose of meditation in a busy practitioner’s day. This video will showcase the meditative aspects of surgery that could be a useful byproduct of one’s surgical experience in the OR
