Abstract

Traumatic optic neuropathy(TON) is a serious complication of craniofacial injury resulting in severe visual loss with minimal possibility for recovery. However, there are no clear guidelines available for the optimum management of TON with suggested options being observation, steroids and surgical optic canal decompression(OCD). With the lack of conclusive evidence in form of randomized controlled trials evaluating the natural course and optimum management of TON, the authors would like to present their novel surgical technique of Navigation guided OCD (NGOCD) in both direct and indirect TON as stereotactic navigation has spurred a technical evolution of enhanced intra-operative safety and precision.

The present video aims to highlight the promising role of NGOCD, which provides precise intra-operative localisation of the optic canal (as trauma deforms the anatomy), with favourable postoperative visual outcome along with improvement in VEP and function of Retinal Nerve fibre layer.
