Abstract
Purpose: To assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and its associated factors among patients treated for glaucoma during early childhood.
Methods: 157 adults with childhood glaucoma (CG) aged 18 years and older (mean age, 24.5 years) completed HRQoL, adjustment to vision loss (AVL), satisfaction with life (SWL), and self-esteem scale (SES) questionnaires. Independent predictors of HRQoL were estimated with multivariate regression analysis (MRA).
Results: Median visual acuity (logMAR) in better eye was 0.30. Unilateral cases reported better HRQoL, AVL and SWL than bilateral cases (P<0.05). MRA indicated that after controlling for covariates, HRQoL shared significant associations with AVL, SWL and SES, and together, these variables explained 49.3% of the variance in HRQoL (P<0.0001). Conclusions: Aspects of health care that increase HRQoL despite the presence of CG are essential given its chronic nature. Unilateral CG reported better HRQoL than bilateral cases.
