Abstract

Purpose: To describe the clinical features and outcomes of patients presenting with orbital metastases as the first sign of underlying malignancy

Methods: Retrospective case series

Results: Between 2014-2019, 30 cases of orbital metastases were diagnosed, of which orbital metastases were the presenting feature in 10/30 (30%) cases. Lung was the most common site of primary tumour (4/10;40%) followed by breast (3/10;30%). Other sites were prostate, gall bladder and colon. Mean duration of complaints prior to presentation was 2.5 months (range:1-6 months). Mean number of metastatic sites (PET-CT screening) at time of diagnosis was 3.3 . All cases were treated with palliative chemo/radiotherapy; 8/10 (75%) patients died due to cancer-related causes while on treatment. Mean survival following diagnosis was 5.8 months.

Conclusion: Malignancies presenting primarily as orbital masses are rare. In our cohort, such cases had disseminated systemic metastases and were associated with poor survival
