Abstract
Objective:To determine testability of visual function in children with Autism spectrum disorder(ASD) using standard tests and to increase the testability using modifications of these tests
Methods:Prospective study of 50 children; The visual function was tested with age appropriate tests, the supports and modifications needed to elicit a response was analysed.
Results:Age:3-12 yrs .Mild ASD in 30/50(62.5%); moderate ASD 18/50(37.5%); 35 (72%) children were nonverbal; 46(92%) lacked eye contact. Hirschberg test, cover test, binocular acuity, Fixation& fundoscopy scored > 50% testability. Monocular acuity, near point of convergence, saccades and pursuits scored <50%. All tests needed support with/without modifications. The testability depended on communication ability, not ASD scores(p<0.05) Conclusion:Children with ASD are testable with standard ophthalmic tests with help of communication , visual and sensory supports. This depends on their ability to communicate and not ASD scores.
