Abstract
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening examination is usually performed by a retina specialist. However, the trend of rapidly rising incidence of ROP has placed a greater burden on retina specialist. To ease this burden, ophthalmologists without pediatric or retinal subspecialty training may be trained and charged with screening of ROP.Ours was a retrospective cross-sectional data analysis of ROP screening from July 2018 to April 2020 in a tertiary centre in South India.500 eyes of 250 babies with any stage of ROP were included in the study.Agreement in diagnosis of ROP between residents and retina specialist was 0.90.Sensitivity, specificity of residents in diagnosing stage 1 ROP was 96.8% and 93.3%.Sensitivity, specificity in diagnosing stage 2 ROP was 86.6% and 99.5%.Sensitivity, specificity in diagnosing stage 3 ROP was 96.8% and 93.3%. Residents trained in ROP screening can, hence,be charged for ROP screening while retina specialist can divert their skills in management of ROP.
