Abstract
Patient-held records (PHRs) are becoming common in healthcare for chronic diseases including glaucoma. There is a lack of evidence of their efficacy for improving clinical outcomes or adherence to treatment. Increased knowledge has been shown to improve adherence to treatment and attendance rates.
Aims:The hypothesis postulates that there will be a change in patient knowledge following the introduction of the logbook as a greater level of patient engagement with the logbook is expected than with standard leaflets.
Methods:A questionnaire was used to investigate any improvement in knowledge after the implementation of a patient-held glaucoma logbook. Sample size:100 Results: Demonstrated a significant improvement in knowledge following the implementation of the logbook (Z = -4.176, p < 0.001).Conclusions:This early research presents a compelling indication that improvements in patient knowledge about glaucoma are closely related to the type of patient held record (PHR) that they use.
