Abstract
CNLDO is common presentation to ophthalmologists& pediatricians.Efficacy of sac compressions has been described in literature. However, many ways of doing the compressions are seen in practice of which most are wrong.Criggler had suggested the technique-Pressure must be applied over sac such that canaliculi are blocked.Pressure causes retained fluid in sac to burst open the membranous block in nasolacrimal duct, thus causing resolution.Wrong techniques which parents follow are being demonstrated.Rise in intrasac pressure is not achieved.Ideally.using index finger, feel edge of bone next to nose & below eye, gently press into gap.Frequency is 10/session &4 sessions/day.Parent should perform the technique on themself.Sac compressions aid resolution of CNLDO.Classically, advocated till age of 1 year but in recent study by Ali et al,proper method has shown efficacy beyond 1 year also. Finally, correct technique of compressions go a long way in treating CNLDO & avoid invasive interventions.
